Maruti Suzuki India Ltd. has begun exporting Suzuki's first battery electric vehicle (BEV), the e-Vitara. In the very first shipment, the company sent over 2,900 cars on Monday from Gujarat’s Pipavav Port to 12 countries in Europe: the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Sweden, Hungary, Iceland, Austria and Belgium.
On 26th August, Prime Minister Narendra Modi flagged off the first e-Vitara from the Gujarat-based factory. The Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara has been manufactured specifically at Maruti Suzuki’s Hansalpur factory. In a statement, Maruti Suzuki India’s Managing Director and CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, said, “The beginning of e-Vitara exports to Europe is truly a matter of pride for us.
Maruti Suzuki aims to ship the e-Vitara to over 100 international destinations while also making it available for buyers in India. In August, the company’s overall exports witnessed a 40% surge, climbing to 36,538 units from 26,003 units in the same month last year.
By choosing Europe as the first destination for the e-Vitara, Maruti Suzuki is not just adding a place to its export list. It is directly stepping into some of the world’s strongest electric vehicle markets, where competition is tough, regulations are strict, and customers have a wide range of options. For India, dispatching 2,900 vehicles carries significance beyond mere figures. It signals that the country is no longer merely a low-cost manufacturing hub but is gradually establishing an impressive global identity.
It is worth noting that in India, Maruti e-Vitara will compete with Hyundai Creta Electric, MG ZS EV, Tata Curve EV, and Mahindra BE 6. Its official price will be announced in the coming months, but according to media reports, its starting price will be from ₹20 lakh. Its production will take place at Suzuki’s Gujarat factory.
